  • Smartphone flash pointed directly at the garment. It blows out the image and creates glare on synthetic fabrics like nylon and polyester.
  • Overhead fluorescent lighting without lateral fill. It creates shadows underneath the garment that distort its silhouette.
  • Mixing natural and artificial light in the same frame. It distorts colors and the AI reproduces incorrect tones.

If you photograph with your phone near a window, with light hitting the front of the garment, no flash, and HDR turned off, you'll solve 80% of cases without spending anything.

Correct Angle and Framing

The camera angle determines how AI interprets the garment's proportions. The ideal angle is always perpendicular to the clothing: camera pointing straight on, no lateral tilt, neither up nor down.

For flat lay (clothing on floor or table): position the camera directly above the garment, looking down at a 90-degree angle. Use the phone grid to align and avoid perspective distortion.

For mannequin or hanger: position the camera at the height of the center of the garment, without tilting. Step back far enough for the entire piece to appear in frame, with at least 10% margin on each side.

Leave margin around the clothing. Don't crop a sleeve, hem, or collar. AI needs to see the complete silhouette to understand the garment's structure and position it correctly on the model. If the collar disappears from the frame, the AI will guess, and the result can look wrong.

Center the garment in the frame. A crooked photo or one where the clothing is shifted to one side tends to produce asymmetric results in generation.

Ideal Background for Clothing Photos

A white or light gray background is the most suitable for AI photos. It creates contrast with most garments and makes it easier for the tool to separate the clothing from the background.

Good background options:

  • White copy paper or white poster board for small pieces like accessories and tops.
  • Plain white wall for pieces on a mannequin or hanger.
  • White table or light-colored tile floor for flat lay.
  • Backdrop roll paper (available at photography stores) for those who photograph frequently.

What to avoid:

  • Patterned, textured, or vibrantly colored backgrounds. AI may confuse background elements with the garment's print.
  • Objects in the background, even when out of focus. They show up in the image analysis.
  • Very textured or thick fabric, which creates unwanted shadows and relief.

If you don't have a white background available, shoot on any neutral, uniform surface. Light gray or simple beige works fine. What doesn't work is a colorful, patterned, or highly textured background.

Preparing the Garment Before Shooting

A poorly prepared garment ruins the photo even with good light and the right angle. Five minutes of preparation makes a big difference in the final result.

  1. Iron the garment. No visible wrinkles, especially on flat fabrics like plain cotton, linen, and viscose. Creases show up in the photo and the AI reproduces them on the virtual model.
  2. Remove lint with an adhesive roller. Lint shows up in close-ups and clutters the image.
  3. Align the garment symmetrically. Sleeves at the same angle, hem aligned, no twist in the body.
  4. Remove price tags. Leave only the composition label if it's a natural part of the product.
  5. Use pins from behind if the garment is loose on the mannequin or hanger. The camera won't pick up pins from behind, but the drape will look correct in front.

For pieces with texture or embroidery, position the camera a bit closer to capture the details. Digital zoom after the fact loses quality. Moving the camera closer maintains sharpness.

  • Is the garment well lit, without harsh shadows covering any part of the clothing?
  • Is the background clean, neutral, and free of visible objects?

  • Is the image at least 800px on the shorter side?
